Oxford Centre for Maritime Archaeology

The Oxford Centre for Maritime Archaeology publishes a monograph series as part of the publication programme of the Institute of Archaeology. The OCMA oversees the scholarly publication of the fieldwork conducted by the IEASM in Alexandria and the submerged Canopic region, as well as post-excavation studies of the material culture recovered from these excavations by IEASM specialists and Hilti Foundation sponsored post-graduate students. The monograph series also includes works based upon OCMA’s conferences.

Each volume is assessed by an internal review committee comprising principal members of staff from the Institute of Archaeology, the Oriental Institute, the Classics Faculty and the Ashmolean museum and is also fully peer-reviewed

Constructing, Remaking and Dismantling Sacred Landscapes in Lower Egypt from the Late Dynastic to the Early Medieval Period Cover
Format: Hardback
Pages: 300
ISBN: 9781998994304
Pub Date: 19 Nov 2021
Series: Oxford Centre for Maritime Archaeology
Description:
The chapters in this volume are organised in such a way as to provide windows onto constructing, remaking, and dismantling sacred landscapes in cities in the north western Delta of Egypt, notably Thonis-Heracleion and Alexandria, and also more widely in Lower Egypt. They are drawn from a conference on the Religious Landscapes of Lower Egypt held at the University of Zurich and present case studies that examine different aspects of the long-term life-histories of the landscape and the unfolding relationships between the people of Egypt and the sacred spaces in which they lived and went about their daily tasks. Through the examination of objects, buildings, cities and landscapes, the papers aim to capture a sense of how space was actively constructed and how these social spaces change through their active manipulation.
